Addon Corner: Power Auras setup

Posted by

I got lots of nice comments about my first UI video, so I made an even longer one! Oh boy oh boy oh boy. :) Most of the questions I received about the UI were about how to set up Power Auras, and questions if I could share my setup. Yes, we can. :) Power Auras settings. All you need to do with those is to copy them paragraph by paragraph. In-game, open the PA settings by typing /powa, click on Import, then paste in your current paragraph. VoilĂ , you have a copy of the settings as seen in the video. Speaking of video, here you are. As always, choose HQ for a much nicer version.

If you have any questions at all, don’t be shy, I could talk about UI stuff aaaaaall day long. :) I am taking this moment to recommend two blogs for the addon-philes: Shields Up! is really a shaman blog during the day (in phases with new content), but UI goodness at night. ;) And then there’s the brandnew NoStockUI by Matticus and co, which is off to a very promising start as dedicated WoW UI blog.

    Nice video – thanks.
Although I can partly dismiss Power Auras on my small 19″ @ 1280 because my Action Bars are much closer to the center of the screen ;)

I even have ClassTimer/DoTimer/whatever for TC and Demo Shout on the lower right above Combat Log and it’s still relatively good to see.
First thought on watching the video on Fullscreen was “I’m lost when glancing to the corners”

I will watch the video tonight so I won’t scare my coworkers.

Power Auras is really cool, I did set it up for my warrior after your last UI video, so it shows when SS, CS, SW and HS are off cooldown, when I can hit revenge and whenever my rage is above 50.

I don’t like the graphics though, so I took my main font and displayed all events as written text, which looked really cool.

After a 25 man raiding night I ditched Power Aura though as too much information was overlapping with addons I’m already using.

My next addon post might be shaman related.

    one more question :)

Above your classtimer bars there is bar with an icon which appears to be the icon for battle shout. What mod is that pls? and what function is it serving pls?

Unit frame is ouf_asym, from this widescreen UI. I am not using any other addons of that package, just the ouf-parts.

The shout bar is part of Cork, a buff reminder addon. It gets its biggest mileage for buff classes, as it reminds when someone has lost their buff provided by you. For warriors it tracks food buff, Shout and Vigilance. The latter I <3 so much. I obviously use Power Auras as shout reminder in raids, so I should probably turn that part off in Cork.

I tried out ouf_asym last night and I am not sure if I like it over ouf_Pazrael.

I wounder what made you switch from Pazrael to asym?

I just like the looks of it. The castbar is slick. I like it that the player frame goes away at full health/zero rage outside of combat. I like having a target portrait again.

They’re both very minimalist layouts that are well designed. However, ouf_pazrael hasn’t seen an update in a long time, and I would like to be safe for 3.1

At this point I’m switching back and forth between ouf_asym and ouf_slim. I can’t believe dawn put out another fantastic looking ouf layout based on my all time favourite ouf_lyn.

Do you heal with this layout as well? because for my shaman I had to offset the castbar so I’d see my health better.

I’m a Power Auras noob, so this may be an obvious answer that I can’t find. In your post you include the file to copy paragraph by paragraph, but to where do I copy the information? I downloaded Power Auras, but I can’t seem to figure out which file I am to be overwriting.

You don’t overwrite anything outside of the game. When in-game, open the configuration typing /powa. Click on the Import button. Copy in one of the strings from the text-file, click on okay, and my settings are imported to your configuration.

Thanks for this, another helpful and informative video. It clears up almost everything about this mod.
The only part I seem to struggle with is getting it to recognise the ‘Use own texture’ as the correct icon. No doubt I an just being silly and need to play with it more.

Oooh. You’ve now inspired me to play around with PowerAuras some more, as well as given me a few ideas for my unitframes that I am currently unhappy with.

    Hiya,

I just wanted to say a big huge thanks for posting the video and the export settings, I LOVE having my eyes in the middle of the screen and not at the bottom checking for cooldowns or sword and board procs!

    Keep the awesome blogs coming!

I already send a message with my question but im not sure i did it right so, here it goes again:

i start using power auras a month ago and i already change it the way i like in my pala, warrior and lock, but there was some modifications i would like to made in my priest according to text auras. Is it possible to use any custom or downloaded fonts in Power auras? i extracted some in .ttf format and they dont seem to work, anyone know why?

    Tks

That sounds like an issue with the addon. I would go to CurseForge and report the issue to the author: http://wow.curseforge.com/addons/powerauras-classic/tickets/

    Hi,
A bit late to discover it but liked your guide a lot.
Could I ask you to share your current exports ? Could not manage to import the ones you have linked on the post.

    Thanks a lot

I am currently using Naithin’s auras with some modifications of my own. He has a set that monitors your rage, Shield Slam and Thunderclap cooldowns and Thunderfury stacks, plus checking for Rend on your targets. You can find it at http://funingames.wordpress.com/2010/10/02/prot-warrioring-at-80-in-4-0/

I keep planning to make another big UI post about the UI I went into 4.0.1 with.

I don’t, because I haven’t played Arms like ever, but the Power Auras Wiki has exports for all specs:
